Keynote: Pasquil teaches preparation and hard work

Fearless. Engaging. Inspirational. These are just a few ways students described the stirring keynote address by Mona Pasquil at the PRSSA 2009 National Conference. Her experience in the political sector of public relations provided valuable insight to Conference attendees.

Mona Pasquil, vice president of MSHC Partners, Inc., shared her experiences as a minority woman in the male-dominated and highly competitive world of politics. Pasquil has an impressive resume in politics and public affairs, including serving as western political director for the White House Office of Political Affairs during the Clinton administration... Member spends summer rocking out with MTV

More than 1,000 miles away from home, PRSSA member Christopher Marsh spent his summer developing his public relations skills, networking with professionals and playing “Rock Band.” Marsh, a senior at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., landed his dream internship: working at MTV Press in New York City.

“Interning with MTV Networks really allowed me to discover my passion for entertainment public relations,” Marsh said. “It gave me the opportunity to work on amazing projects that I would not have had anywhere else.”.. [more]

What is Your Sustainable Worth

Ask a room full of people the definition of sustainability and you’ll get a different answer from everyone. Although the current trend of “going green” is part of the equation, sustainability is more of a culmination of long-term practices and innovative ideas to maintain well-being. An effective strategy incorporates economic, social and environmental aspects and how combining each of these pieces can achieve lasting success.

“It’s more than putting in an energy-saving light bulb; it’sturning that idea into how this efficiency will benefit the community in the long run,” said Brian Boerner, environmental management director for the City of Fort Worth, Tex. “We need to figure out how to do things that are already embedded in our strategies and make them more cost-effective and socially responsible.”.. Public Relations and Blogging

There are more than four million blogs on the Web today. Every seven seconds a new one is created. Public relations professionals are embracing this new communication phenomenon as a means of communicating with stakeholders, colleagues and public relations students. Over the years, blogging has become a new media outlet for expressing creative ideas and opinions.

Dr. Mihaela Vorvoreanu, professor at Purdue University and creator of People Research Connections (PR Connections), a blog about research in public relations and other topics... [more]

Scholarship checklist

Don’t get your scholarship application dismissed for simple mistakes. Follow these steps to ensure the application process is stress-free.

1. Research applicable scholarships.
Search for scholarships on www.prssa.org. Under Member Scholarships and Awards, you will find upcoming scholarships, with their deadlines and submission requirements. Expand your search beyond PRSSA or public relations scholarships by using scholarship databases, searching certified government Web sites, and even applying for local scholarships. If you find a scholarship you are interested in but not eligible for, archive it for later.

2. Organize scholarships.
Organize the scholarships by deadlines and check to see if the deadlines are postmark or submission dates. Be sure you are eligible for the scholarships you are applying for to avoid wasting time and money. Some applications may be lengthy or require several items. Also consider grouping related scholarships... [more]

Ask the Professional: Should young PR professionals attend graduate school?

Full disclosure: I never attended grad school. While I’ve enjoyed a successful career, I often wish I had taken the advice I now give to individuals who ask this very question, yes.

But a decision to attend grad school must be based on rational reasons, not an impulse caused by difficulty in landing a job in the current bleak economy... [more]
