The First Chapters

On April 4, 1968, the PRSA Board of Directors created the first PRSSA chapters at nine schools which met the charter requirements.

Those charter chapters were the University of Florida, the University of Houston, the University of Maryland, Ohio State University, San Jose State College, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, Utica College, and West Virginia University. The total chapter membership was 196.

Three additional chapters were approved on June 28: Central Missouri, North Dakota and Syracuse universities. One more – Kent State University – received its charter on September 13. Another, at Northern lllinois University, was created on November 17.

A total of 14 PRSSA "alpha" chapters in that first year!

The PRSSA chapter's university must offer a sequence of at least five courses in public relations to establish and maintain a chapter:

  • Principles, Practice and Theory of Public Relations
  • Public Relations Techniques: Writing, Message Dissemination and Media Networking
  • Public Relations Research for Planning and Evaluation
  • Public Relations Strategy and Implementation
  • Public Relations Supervised Experience
