Rowan University - "Fresh Baked Pretzel Sale"
January 2006 National FUNdraising Bowl Winners
Amount Raised: About $60 weekly ($1,178 last semester)
Implementation Dates: 12 years and running
Suggested Planning Time: Two hours
Number of Staff Needed: 2-3 students
Description of Event:
Every morning 75 freshly baked pretzels are delivered to the communication building at Rowan University. The first PRSSA member that arrives in the morning places the box of pretzels on a small cart with mustard, napkins, and a bucket of change. That cart is placed next to a small room that we at Rowan University have nick-named the “pretzel closet.” Over the course of the day, the vice president of finance checks up on the change bucket and pretzels a few of times. We charge 75 cents for one pretzel, or two for a dollar. We purchase the pretzels from Center City Pretzel Co., Inc., located on Washington Ave. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Delivery is free and the pretzels cost 18 cents a piece. The best thing about this fundraiser is how established it is. We sell out of pretzels most days and make about $60 weekly. People even complain when the pretzels aren’t around. The cafeteria is a decent walk from the communication building and, for 75 cents, a pretzel is a tasty, salty but healthy snack in between classes.
Promotion for Event:
The Rowan University Pretzel sale has been around for over ten years. We no longer actively promote it. We have flyers around our communication building, but we rely on word of mouth and the enticing aroma of fresh baked Philly pretzels to keep our sales up.
How did you encourage members to participate?
The beauty about this fundraiser is that it's easy to run with one or two people. My Chapter helps with set-up, but there is no upkeep and the pretzels literally sell themselves.
