Kate Langmoreland tells Iowa about the Skydive

Marge Didier sells a raffle ticket on air

Marge Didier, UNI Chapter President

Promotion for Event:
We kicked-off the event on Feb. 26 at the membership meeting with a PowerPoint on the raffle, our goals, and some selling tips. We also had a representative from the Des Moines Skydive Club available for questions and to show the skydiving equipment. We also ran a video of an actual skydive, which we also used later at the student union.

Our members wore a little badge that said, “I Have Tandem Skydive Raffle Tickets” all of the time-wherever we went.

Kate Langmoreland and Marge Dider were interviewed on radio station KBBG for an hour about the Regional Activity and the Tandem Skydive… I sold a ticket while on the air!!! This fundraiser was a blast!

Description of Event:
We purchased the tandem skydive with the Des Moines Skydivers. We had raffle tickets printed in "sky blue" – and distributed fliers around campus and at local businesses.

We set up and sold tickets at the entrance of Cedar Falls Super Wal-mart on two Saturdays, and we also set up for three days in the student union where we ran a continuous video of an actual skydive by a former UNI student. We also opened a hotmail account tandemskydive@hotmail.com.

Additional Information:
We got the idea from President Marge Didier, who made her first tandem skydive jump last October. Marge is a 54-year-old non-traditional student and also has three other Didier family members who tandem skydived. We thought that this event would be low in expenses and high in return, as we sold the raffle tickets for $5 each. The drawing for the raffle will occur on Sun. April 10 at the Regional Activity.

Joan-Patricia O'Connor, a graduate student at the University of Southern California and one of the two "token" students on PRSA's Committee on Student Organization, took the initiative. In 1973, she presented to the PRSA Board of Directors and Assembly a resolution calling for PRSSA to be managed by students. The Assembly and Board, led by Betsy Plank, 1973 president of PRSA, gave their formal approval during the PRSA Annual Conference in November in Honolulu.
