Sam Houston State University - "Sammy Sweethearts"

March 2006 National FUNdraising Bowl Winners

Amount Raised: $530

Implementation Dates: February 6-14

Suggested Planning Time: 3-5 hours

Number of Staff Needed: 10

Description of Event:
Our members sold three items for Valentine's Day, including a V-Day pillow for $5, a Sammy Pack filled with candy and party favors for $3 and a mini pack filled with candy for $1.50. We offered preorder, local delivery and pickup for on campus students.

Promotion for Event:
We distributed flyers, created a website, set up a customer service number and posted advertisements on both our local television station's bulletin board and www.facebook.com.

How did you encourage members to participate?
We offered the following incentives for the top three sellers: 1st prize—2 tickets to a Houston Rockets game, 2nd prize—dinner for two at Chili's, 3rd prize—gift certificate to Luby's.

Additional Information:
This event was successful because at least 75 percent of our members participated. The event also inspired 10 new members to join! We donated remaining profits to SAAFE House (a shelter that houses abused women and children) and encouraged other groups to create similar products. This was our first experiment with Sammy Sweethearts and we're sure it will become an annual event.

On November 11, 1967, 20 years after its own establishment, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) founded the Public Relations Student Society of America. Beginning at the 2002 National Conference in San Francisco, CA, PRSSA will begin celebrating 35 successful years as a society. Thank you to all that made this achievement possible!
