Promotion for Event:
Brandon Smith, coordinator of the event, was interview three times on MIX-96 radio with Jaime (local DJ). We printed 2,000 brochures and distributed throughout the campus and community. We created press releases, table tents, and extra-credit for personal wellness was arranged for students. We also set up an information table at the student union. Finally, courtesy phone calls were made to last years participants as a reminder and recruiting tool.
Description of Event:
The University of Northern Iowa hosted a 5K walk/run open to the public. We recruited sponsors and teamed up with a local charity, Jaime and Jim’s Kids. Jamie and Jim’s Kids send terminally ill children and families on a worry free vacation to Disney World.
The run started at 9 a.m. at Gateway Park, in Cedar Falls. The course was laid out along the Cedar Falls River, so runners enjoyed the beauty of nature while participating in this event. First, second and third place medals were awarded to runners in several age groups.
Over 100 sponsors donated prizes that were presented to lucky winners – in fact, there was such a great response from sponsors that everyone was a winner! Over eighty people came out to weather the 35 degree temperature!
Additional Information:
This is an annual fundraiser and community service event. One-half of the proceeds go to a non-profit organization – this year to Jaime and Jim’s kids. This run is the first run for many of the Cedar Falls joggers of the year. Even though it was bitterly cold with wind coming off the river – we had a great turn out of both community and PRSSA!
