A Brief History | The First Chapters | National Committees

Barbara Tate

  • 2005-2006 FORUM Editor-in-Chief

Barbara E. Tate, FORUM editor-in-chief, joins the National Committee from Ohio Northern University. Barbie is a junior studying public relations with minors in political science and marketing.

After joining the ONU Chapter as a freshman, Barbie became an active member of the organization, working for the student-run firm and writing for the newsletter, which led to her election as public relations director. Barbie has participated in the Bateman Case Study Competition as well as numerous ONU PRSSA and Central Ohio PRSA activities, including the Bob Garrison mentoring program. She was also a part of the delegation that presented a Chapter Development Session at the 2004 National Conference.

At the end of her first year, Barbie earned her Chapter’s Outstanding New Member Award. In the spring of 2005, she received the Outstanding Chapter Member Award, as well as the President’s Award.

Barbie has been a public relations tutor and now serves as the student editor for the Mid-South Sociological Association newsletter. This summer she successfully completed an internship at Fahlgren Mortine Public Relations in Columbus, Ohio, which included the prestigious Founder’s Award and scholarship.

Outside of PRSSA, Barbie is a member of Delta Zeta national sorority, ONU College Democrats and the Newman Club, as well as Sigma Alpha Lambda and Pi Sigma Alpha honoraries. During her time at Ohio Northern, she has earned a variety of awards for exceptional leadership and is proud to say that both she and fellow National Committee member Kevin Saghy were awarded DeBow Freed Awards for Outstanding Leadership in 2005.

In her free time, Barbie loves to have fun with her friends, who support her in everything she does. She also likes warm weather, Ohio State football and classic movies. A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, Barbie still enjoys going home to visit her wonderful family and Lake Erie.

Public relations:

  • is a means for the public to have its desires and interests felt by institutions in our society. It speaks for the public to otherwise unresponsive organizations, as well as speaking for those organizations to the public.

  • helps achieve mutual adjustment between institutions and groups, establishing smoother relationships that benefit the public.

  • can be a safety valve for freedom. By providing means of working out accommodations, it makes arbitrary action or coercion less likely.

  • is an essential element in the communications system that enables individuals to be informed on many aspects of subjects that affect their lives.

  • can help activate organizations' social conscience.

  • is a universal activity. Everyone practices principles of public relations in seeking acceptance, cooperation or affection of others. Public relations professionals only practice it in a more professional way.
