A Brief History | The First Chapters | National Committees

Vernetta Kiser

  • 2005-2006 Vice President of Professional Development

Vernetta Kiser, 2005-2006 vice president of Professional Development, joins the 2005 – 2006 Public Relations Student Society of America’s (PRSSA) National Committee from West Virginia State University. She is starting her senior year in the fall where she is pursuing a bachelor of science in communications with a minor in public relations. She currently has an associate degree in marketing-public relations from West Virginia State Community and Technical College and has a certificate in computer programming.

Vernetta joined the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) for the professional and peer networking, but quickly took an active role in the newly forming student-run firm at West Virginia State University, Tower Communications. She has held the position of public relations officer, student-run firm director, vice president and Chapter president. Being a non-traditional student, she knows that there is more to education than classroom studies. Vernetta is dedicated to excellence in the PRSSA organization and is eager and willing to learn and share her experiences with others.

Vernetta played a key roll in developing and implementing primary goals, operating plans, policies, and short-and long-range objectives for West Virginia State University’s student-run firm. She was responsible for establishing the organizational structure and delegating authority to account executives. She has represented Tower Communications to the financial community, major clients, government agencies, school administration, and the public, and was instrumental in Tower Communications achieving $40,300 in paid public relations contracts in three years.

Vernetta has developed and implemented public relations campaigns through Tower Communications. As well as being firm director, she has served as account executive, graphic designer, entertainment coordinator, and researcher. She developed an award-winning portfolio for the West Virginia State University’s PRSSA, and entered it in the WVSU Student Government Association-sponsored “Service to Community” competition. The Chapter won “Student Organization of the Year” for 2003 and the $500 monetary prize.

Vernetta is a member of the West Virginia Office of Homeland Security – West Virginia Disaster Education Network (WVDEN). The assigned task of the group is to develop training modules for the public using nonprofessional terms that will assist the community in disaster preparedness, reaction and recovery.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Vernetta is the youngest of nine children, one of which is her fraternal twin sister. “With a family the size of mine you learn to share at an early age.” Her friends describe her as genuine, hard working, persistent, dedicated, and an adaptable individual.

Vernetta feels that we (PRSSA) are pre-professional networking organization and when one succeeds so should we all. Sharing education and accomplishments is the key to success.

It was the students themselves who proposed the national dues structure for individual members of PRSSA to help make the student organization more self-supporting. The plan was adopted in November 1973 with predictions that membership would reduce by half. Instead, it promptly increased by 20 percent!
