Newark, Del. — On Monday, October 31, 2011, fourteen members of the University of Delaware Public Relations Student Society of America (UD PRSSA) collaborated to craft a media kit for UDance, the largest student-run philanthropy at the school. Students created a regional media list, fact sheet and press release for UDance to use as part of their public relations strategy.
“This event was a great way for our members to learn more about developing a press release,” said Abby Stollar, UD PRSSA Chapter President. “The best part is that our work will be used to further the mission and message of UDance, as they continue their fight to see a world without childhood cancer.”
To kick off the event, Joe McDonough, the executive director of the B+ Foundation, and the off-campus public relations chair for UDance, Joe Mashek, explained the mission and goal of the organization and their current media relations needs.
Similar to Penn State University’s “Thon,” UDance invites individuals to stand for twelve-hours in honor of those affected by pediatric cancer. The dance marathon raises awareness about and money for childhood cancer support and research. The event celebrates the “B+ heroes,” children currently battling childhood cancer, and the fundraising efforts of the teams.
UDance currently engages University students, but hopes to include the greater Delaware community. PRSSA created a press kit to help the group achieve their goal of reaching more Delawareans to help join in the fight against childhood cancer.
After an hour of research and hard work, members reconvened and combined the group products into a complete media kit. Members left with pieces for their portfolio and a snapshot of how to create a media kit for a client, while UDance received a resource to expand the reach of the dance marathon.
