Marist PRSSA Chapter Recognized For Establishing Leadership Forum

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Red Foxes PRSSA Chapter at Marist College was recognized by Marist President Dennis J. Murray in February for establishing an annual leadership forum that is expected to contribute to the College’s new Raymond A. Rich Institute for Leadership Development.

The Chapter organized a week-long discussion forum as part of its “Leadership Awareness Week” last November. Senior leaders like President Murray, School of Communication and the Arts Dean Steven Ralston, the school’s Assistant Dean Mary Alexander and Faculty Adviser Mark A. Van Dyke joined the Chapter’s executive board members for the fully-online discussion. The interactive discussion covered topics such as leadership traits and principles, ethics, leadership in public relations and gender in leadership.

The Chapter enriched the discussion with lessons learned from the personal experiences of Marist’s senior leaders and by drawing upon resources provided by the Center on Communication Leadership at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication, the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences, the Arthur Page Society and the Institute for Public Relations. The discussion also focused on studies of leadership and gender in the public relations profession by Dr. Linda Aldoory and Dr. Elizabeth Toth at the University of Maryland.

Inspired by their attendance at the PRSSA 2009 National Conference, Red Foxes Chapter President Courtney Davis and National Assembly Representative Megan Hunsicker told the leadership forum participants about the importance of commitment as a leadership quality. Ms. Hunsicker noted, “It’s not about the positions we hold, the events we plan or the committees we set up; it’s about having heart. It’s about loving public relations and having a passion for PRSSA.”

Ms. Davis added, “Like Megan said, seeing all of the enthusiasm at the Conference really put everything into perspective. There are at least 1,000 people just like us all across the country. These are young professionals who are committed to their Chapters, careers and their members.”

President Murray, in remarks delivered in February, thanked the Chapter’s leadership for organizing this inaugural event. “It was a great series of events,” President Murray observed. “In the future, I look forward to coordinating some of these activities with the Rich Institute for Leadership. Thanks for your continued good work!”

The Rich Institute for Leadership Development at Marist College was established in 2009 with a bequest of $75 from Raymond A. Rich, one of the 20th century’s leading industrialists and businessmen. The Institute’s programs will educate and train individuals in the art of leadership for careers in business, government and the nonprofit sector.
