PRSSA Selects the U.S. Census Bureau as Client for the 2010 Bateman Case Study Competition

PRSSA Selects the U.S. Census Bureau as Client for the 2010 Bateman Case Study Competition

NEW YORK (July 29, 2009) — The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has selected the U.S. Census Bureau as the sponsor for the 2010 Bateman Case Study Competition. This year, Bateman competitors will prepare and mobilize their communities to participate in the 2010 Census.

PRSSA’s selection of the U.S. Census Bureau comes amid exciting changes to the census that should present a few extra challenges and opportunities for this year’s competitors. For the 2010 Census, the Bureau is using only the short form in its count. This format change and the opportunity of being part of an ongoing national campaign were factors PRSSA considered when selecting the 2010 Bateman Case Study client.

“The 2010 Census presents an ideal learning laboratory for college students because their programs will need to target not only the campus population, but also the broader community beyond the university or college,” said Stephen Buckner, assistant division chief for the Census Bureau’s public information office. “The U.S. Census Bureau is eager to see what students develop and how they work to build integrated programs that help educate the public about the 2010 Census and inspire people to participate when they receive their census form.”

Priority publics will include college students and the communities surrounding the competitors’ schools.

The Bateman Case Study Competition originated in 1973 as the National Case Study, a program that allowed PRSSA members to exercise the analytical skills required for public relations problem solving. In 1983, the name of the competition was changed to honor the late J. Carroll Bateman, APR. Bateman was a past president of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and was very instrumental in the founding of PRSSA.

About the U.S. Census Bureau
The U.S. Census Bureau, founded in 1902, conducts a census every 10 years as mandated by the Constitution. The questionnaire for the upcoming 2010 Census will be one of the shortest in history: just 10 questions that will take only about 10 minutes to complete. All responses are kept strictly confidential. The Census data are used to apportion the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Census data are also used to distribute more than $400 billion in federal funds each year. For more information, please visit www.2010census.gov.
