UGA's PRSSA Chapter Sponsors 2nd Annual "PR Workout"

ATHENS, Ga. (Feb. 2, 2010) — The University of Georgia’s (UGA) PRSSA Chapter hosted its 2nd annual “PR Workout” on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010.

PR Workout is a university service event PRSSA offers to teach other campus organizations how to use PR to improve their organization. More than 30 representatives from UGA student organizations attended.

The event included a series of 30-minute panels led by PRSSA members. Panel leaders discussed how students can apply specific aspects of public relations, such as event planning and fund raising, member recruitment, media relations, legalities and social media to their campus organizations. In addition to panel discussions, students received packets containing handouts of useful information for their organizations.

PR Workout was a dream of Debbie Ebalobo, current PRSSA Chapter President. “Prior to joining PRSSA, I was involved in other organizations on campus, and often they had problems with various aspects of PR,” Ebalobo said. “As President, I wanted to increase diversity within PRSSA, so I thought that these two issues could go hand-in-hand. As a PR organization, I thought we could help student groups, and in return, we would increase the diversity in majors and in people who are a part of PRSSA.

Michael Gray, a representative from UGA Miracle, was pleased with the insight he gained from attending the event. “PR Workout was a great seminar full of useful and practical lessons each organization would benefit to learn, regardless of the organization's nature,” Gray said. “Personally, I loved ‘PR Workout.’ Having students and recent graduates, who have been in our shoes, to talk with us made it even more credible.”

With 241 members as of December 2009, PRSSA is the largest student organization within the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.  A major component of the UGA Chapter of PRSSA is public service. The Chapter looks for opportunities to serve within the university and in the community. Their student-run PR firm, Creative Consultants, now serves 25 clients.
