BurrellesLuce Arthur Wynne Jr. Memorial Award

On behalf of BurrellesLuce, you are invited to apply for the Arthur Wynne Jr. Memorial Award.

This award program, now in its second year, will recognize one college student (a member of PRSSA) and aspiring public relations/communications professional for his/her achievements in the development of a public relations program and commitment to the practice of public relations.

One award in the amount of $1,000 will be presented during the PRSA International and PRSSA National Conferences scheduled for November 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah, which the award winner is strongly encouraged to attend and participate in.

Participants will be given a free trial subscription to (and information on how to utilize) MediaContactsTM, the online media directory that is powered by eNR Services, Inc. and hosted within the BurrellesLuce MediaConnect Web portal, to prepare their award program submission. (This subscription will automatically expire on October 6, 2006.)

Completed entries must be received by Friday, October 6, 2006. We look forward to receiving your submissions. Good luck.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be registered as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited four-year college or university as a public relations, journalism, communications or marketing major or minor.
  2. Have attained either junior or senior status by the fall semester of 2006.
  3. Be a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Students are encouraged to enter either an individual or team submission. Award money will be divided equally among all participants if a team entry wins.

REQUIREMENTS

To apply for the award, eligible candidates must follow these guidelines:

  1. Send the following information via e-mail to Brent Hendrix (brent.hendrix@prsa.org) immediately upon decision to participate in awards program.

    • Major/Minor
    • Class status (Junior/Senior) and anticipated graduation month/year
    • Mailing Address
    • Permanent Address
    • Telephone Number
    • E-Mail Address

    Once we receive your e-mail indicating your desire to participate, you will be provided with MediaContacts? login information and password.

  2. Submit the completed two-page application for submission with their entry.

  3. (A) Signature of PRSSA Faculty Advisor on application OR (B) official transcript sent with application to confirm major/minor course of study is within program requirements.

ENTRY/SUBMISSIONS

Please submit a typed public relations program as follows:

Utilizing MediaContacts and your general knowledge of public relations practice, devise a general public relations program for a product launch (you can select the product of your choice). You will develop key messaging points and promotional ideas for publicizing the product in both industry and consumer publications. You will also build a media list of key contacts using MediaContacts for the product launch. Discuss how you would utilize a media monitoring service, like BurrellesLuce, to monitor the coverage your efforts have generated and how you would measure that coverage. Access will be provided to the BurrellesLuce MediaConnect Web portal so that you can acquaint yourself with a current monitoring and measuring program and a staff person will be available to answer any questions you may have about the portal’s functionality and capabilities.

Entries must include all of the following to be eligible for judging:

  1. Clearly stated objectives for product launch and publicity/promotional campaign
  2. Key messaging points for product launch
  3. Description of target media for product launch and a list of key media contacts developed using MediaContacts
  4. Overview of promotional plan
  5. Description of how you will monitor and evaluate your news coverage

DEADLINE

Deadline for submission of the completed application and entries is Friday, October 6, 2006. Late submissions will not be considered.

JUDGING

Submissions will be evaluated and final selection determined by Friday, October 27, 2006.

Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts on the following:

  • Clarity of objectives.
  • Consistency and appropriateness of messaging points.
  • Accuracy of media list and inclusion of proper media outlets.
  • Overall creativity and originality
  • Clarity of monitoring instructions
  • Specific details regarding the evaluation of your coverage

PRSSA chapters are chartered by the PRSA National Board of Directors and must meet the following criteria:

  • The chapter's university must offer a sequence of at least five courses in public relations.

  • The chapter must have a minimum of 10 students, at least one of whom has completed a public relations course. The rest have to exhibit an interest in taking public relations classes, either in writing or by enrolling in such a class.

  • At least eight students have to be at or below the junior level.

  • The students must elect a faculty advisor, who must be a full-time instructor of public relations and a member of the Public Relations Society of America.

  • The students must elect one or two professional advisors, both of which have to be members of PRSA. At least one of the professional advisors must have at least five years of experience in the profession or be accredited by PRSA.

  • The chapter's application must be endorsed by the president and four members of the sponsoring PRSA chapter.
