Betsy Plank/PRSSA Scholarships
2008 application form: PDF | Word
Deadline: Monday, June 2, 2008
Awards: $4,250 (total)
In October 2008, will you be a public relations junior or senior? If so, we invite you to participate in the 2008 Betsy Plank/PRSSA Scholarship Program. Requirements are noted in the Eligibility Section of this announcement. NOTE: There is no limit to the number of applicants from a PRSSA Chapter in good standing.
This unique program also honors the scholarship winners' Faculty and Professional Advisors. Now sponsored by the PRSA Foundation, the program was established by the Champions For PRSSA, an informal group of professionals who have special, ongoing interests in PRSSA, its members and public relations education. PRSSA has named the scholarships for Betsy Plank, who—together with PRSSA “godfather” Jon Riffel—founded the Champions in 1981.
Winners will be announced and the scholarships will be presented at the Awards Ceremony and Dinner during the 2008 National Conference in Detroit.
Entries will be judged by a committee of Champions who will name First, Second, and Third Honor winners. A Fourth Honor Scholarship may be awarded, or ties may be declared, provided there are candidates of special merit and sufficient funds.
Since the Scholarship Program was established in 1988, more than $91,000 has been awarded to 64 students in 45 schools. The PRSA Foundation is now building an endowment to fund these scholarships in the future.

About Betsy Plank
Betsy Plank was the PRSA President in 1973, and the first woman
to lead the Society, as well as the chair of the U.S. Section
of International Public Relations Association (1980-81). She was
the first person to receive three of PRSA's top honors for professionals--the
Gold Anvil in 1977 as the outstanding U.S. Professional, the Paul
Lund Award in 1989 for her exemplary civic and community work,
and the first Jackson Award in 2001 for distinguished service
to the Society.
She has pioneered public relations education for students, and
is very dedicated to PRSSA. As one of the four co-chairs for the
Champions for PRSSA, Ms. Plank has devoted much of her time to
students and their needs. She co-chaired the 1987 Commission to
develop guidelines for the undergraduate public relations curriculum
in U.S. colleges and universities, and has been a past National
Advisor for PRSSA, alloting her a namesake chapter at Northern
Illinois University, as well as having named their annual scholarship
in her honor. An active member of the Arthur Page W. Page Society,
and a PRSSA Hall of Fame achiever, Ms. Plank has accrued several
Awards and nationally recognized achievements over the years.
Even so, she still finds time to attend PRSSA's annual National
Assembly and both PRSA's and PRSSA's National Conferences each
year in support of its programs to further the field.
If you have any questions about applying
for this award, please contact the PRSSA
Vice President of Member Services.
