New Deadline: Monday, June 16, 2008
Awards: $1,000
The annual PROFESSOR SIDNEY GROSS MEMORIAL AWARD is presented in memory of the late Sid Gross, a respected practitioner, former New York University faculty member and department chairman, and strong advocate of ethics in public relations practice.
Professor Gross' positions on ethical practice have taken on increasingly significant meaning each year, as more and more organizations put strong ethical commitments among their top priorities. In 1985, Professor Gross said: "I see the great challenge to public relations to educate private sector management on ethical concerns ... in all phases of policy development."
Originally a journalist, Professor Gross began his career in public relations during the early 1950s. In 1971, he became the founder and president of his own agency. At age 59, he sold his successful firm to undertake a new career -- teaching journalism and public relations. He joined the New York University faculty as head of the public relations concentration. Four years later, he was appointed chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, a post he held until his death in November 1986. The $1,000 award is funded each year by contributions from friends and family.
