Contiki Holidays 2002 Bateman Case Study Competition

Background Information

A National Case Study competition was established by PRSA in 1973 to allow members of the Public Relations Society of America an opportunity to exercise the analytical skills and mature judgement required for public relations problem-solving.

The name of the competition was changed in 1983 to honor the late J. Carroll Bateman, APR. Mr. Bateman was a past president of both the Public Relations Society of America (1967) and the International Public Relations Association (1980). After a distinguished career as president of the Insurance Information Institute, he became professor of public relations at the University of Tennessee and faculty advisor of its PRSSA Chapter. A charter Friend of PRSSA, Mr. Bateman was instrumental in founding PRSSA during his PRSA presidency.

Case problems have included situations dealing with nuclear energy, the American Heart Association, international relations, a not-for-profit community-centered family counseling service provider, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, SOLOBIZ.COM and Visa U.S.A. in 2001.

This year we are especially proud to announce that the 2002 Bateman Case Study Competition will be sponsored by Contiki Holidays. Contiki is the world’s largest travel company for 18 to 35-year-olds, specializing in motorcoach tours throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the recent tragedy occurring in the United States, both PRSSA and Contiki Holidays realizes this campaign has become more challenging to both the participants and the audience involved. The idea of international travel—and targeting people to continue—has taken on a whole new approach. Keeping this in mind, the Bateman participants should include the recent societal trends in all materials, including stereotypes, myths and perceptions of international travel.

Joan-Patricia O'Connor, a graduate student at the University of Southern California and one of the two "token" students on PRSA's Committee on Student Organization, took the initiative. In 1973, she presented to the PRSA Board of Directors and Assembly a resolution calling for PRSSA to be managed by students. The Assembly and Board, led by Betsy Plank, 1973 president of PRSA, gave their formal approval during the PRSA Annual Conference in November in Honolulu.
