Dr. F.H. Teahan Chapter Awards Program

Deadline: June 6, 2014

Categories

The Teahan Awards honor Chapters for accomplishments in the following categories. Click on the category to see the award and a description of the requirements.

Eligibility

All PRSSA Chapters in good standing are welcome to apply. Be sure to adhere to the following rules:

  • Chapters may submit only one entry per category.
  • If a Chapter wins an award, they many not submit an entry in the same category the next year.
  • You may submit entries in as many categories as you want.
  • If your Chapter wins the Outstanding Chapter award, you cannot win any other category, except Faculty Adviser and Professional Adviser.

Application

Teahan Award applications must be submitted in a hardcover three-ring binder, not to exceed 2 inches at the spine. All materials in the binder must be on 8 1/2 inch x 11 inch paper.

  • Application form (Word or PDF). Each entry must include the application form. Copies are acceptable.
  • Four-page summary. Each entry must include a written typed, double-spaced summary of four pages or fewer.
  • Supporting materials. You may include graphics, programs, brochures, endorsements and other supporting materials, if they fit in your binder. Include pictures of supporting materials that do not fit.
  • Budget. The total cost of preparing each entry must not exceed $55. An itemized account of expenditures, such as the cost of the binder and printing (not including shipping or postage) must accompany each entry. Entries exceeding the $55 limit or without a budget will be disqualified.

Entries will be penalized or disqualified if they include non-pertinent information, fail to specify their category or do not follow the rules above.

Make sure all materials are error free and thoroughly proofread. All application materials must be received at PRSSA Headquarters (not just postmarked) by June 6, 2014. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Tips for Success

  • Be specific in your descriptions. Give details.
  • Highlight results and provide context. Explain the campaign and how the money was used.
  • Point out what makes your Chapter different or special in this category for this year.
  • Gather appropriate materials that illustrate projects, such as photographs, clippings and brochures.
  • Package your entry in an attractive, business-like way. Presentation matters.
  • Follow the rules carefully.
  • Remember to include your budget for entry preparation.
  • Divide the workload of preparing the entry among your Chapter members, and then have one person edit the copy to create a consistent writing style.
  • Even small Chapters can win. The judges take Chapter size and university resources into consideration.
  • Don’t procrastinate. Rushing results in a disorganized, poorly written entry.
  • Proofread for typos, grammar and style.
  • Write concisely. Make the four pages count.

About Dr. F.H. “Chris” Teahan

Dr. F.H. “Chris” Teahan, was the retired vice president of education for the PRSA. A founder of the PRSSA in 1968, he was a legendary champion of students, their educators, and education for public relations. He served as staff counsel to the PRSA Educators Academy and to the 1975 and 1987 commissions which developed guidelines for public relations study in U.S. colleges and universities.

When he retired in the late 80s, PRSSA celebrated him and his legacy at its national conference and named its annual Chapter awards for outstanding performance in his honor. Dr. Teahan wrote “A Brief History of PRSSA,” published in 1989 by the Friends of PRSSA, of which he was a life member. He was an accredited member of PRSA, its College of Fellows and Educators Academy.

A graduate of Trinity University in Dublin, during his retirement he made his home near Avignon, enjoying music and travel, often hosting PRSA associates visiting southern France. He died on his 77th birthday, March 11, 1999, in France.
